Proton VPN is definitely the best free Android VPN in 2025. I really like how its free VPN plan allows unlimited data, so there are no limits on how much data you can use — most free VPNs limit you to around 2–10 GB of data per month. 

And the provider’s Android app is really good too. It has a quick-connect feature that automatically connects you to the fastest server for your location. And I also like how all settings and features come with helpful explanations, so you never feel lost while using the app. 

In addition, Proton VPN’s free plan comes with strong security and privacy. The provider has an audited no-logs policy, and its Android app (along with all of its other apps) is also open-source, which means anyone can inspect the security code for vulnerabilities. hide.me’s free VPN plan allows unlimited data and is really secure — that’s because the provider uses RAM-only servers and perfect forward secrecy to protect your web traffic. What’s more, it also comes with full leak protection. In fact, I ran 15+ leak tests while connected to one of its free server locations, and I never experienced any leaks. Finally, I also really like how the provider has a strict no-logs policy that has been independently audited.

I also like how the free plan lets you use VPN servers in 5+ countries, including locations in Germany, the US, the Netherlands, France, and Finland. This improves your odds of getting good speeds if you’re in Europe, as it’s easy to connect to nearby servers — that said, I generally maintained fast browsing speeds even though I’m located outside of Europe. 

The provider’s Android app is pretty good — it’s simple to navigate, and it comes with split-tunneling, which is really convenient. That said, I think Proton VPN has a much neater-looking Android app (hide.me’s Android app design simply looks a bit outdated).

Plus, I like that the provider’s Android app is feature-rich. It comes with split-tunneling, and it also provides access to an advanced ad blocker called R.O.B.E.R.T. — the ad blocker blocks ads, trackers, and malicious sites, and you can also configure it to block porn sites, gambling sites, and clickbait content. 5. TunnelBear — Beginner-Friendly Free VPN for Android TunnelBear

TunnelBear is one of the most intuitive free Android VPNs out there. Its Android app is extremely simple to navigate, and I like how it comes with a digital map that lets you connect to the provider’s servers. Plus, the app is really cute too — when you connect to a server, an animated digital bear digs a tunnel to the server’s location. Also, when the connection goes through, the digital bear roars. And I love how the provider allows unlimited connections. 

The provider’s free VPN plan also provides access to all features. You get access to useful extras, such as split-tunneling and obfuscation (this is also one of the few free Android VPNs that works in restrictive countries). Also, you get full access to TunnelBear’s entire server network, which is really big — 5,000+ servers in 45+ countries.

That said, TunnelBear’s free VPN plan limits you to 2 GB per month. Unfortunately, this is only enough for a few hours of basic web browsing. If this is a deal-breaker, I recommend trying Proton VPN or hide.me instead, as they both provide unlimited bandwidth on their free plans.

Hotspot Shield’s free plan provides good browsing speeds — this is mostly thanks to its proprietary Hydra protocol, which is designed to be both secure and very fast. Whenever I use this free VPN service on my Android device, all the sites I access always load instantly. 

Plus, the provider’s Android app is user-friendly as well. It’s very easy to navigate its interface, and I like how settings and available features come with quick, helpful explanations — this is very helpful if you’re new to VPNs. 

That said, Hotspot Shield’s free VPN plan on Android is very limited. While it has unlimited data, you can only use a VPN server for up to 15 minutes at a time — and every time you want to connect to the VPN, you need to watch an unskippable 30-second ad, which is very annoying. In addition, the free plan only lets you use 1 server location in the US. And I also don’t like how the free plan logs your IP address, which it needs to serve you ads. 

Hotspot Shield’s paid version starts at $6.66/month. It removes all of the inconvenient limitations mentioned above, but I still think the VPN is pretty pricey. On the plus side, it comes with a 45-day money-back guarantee.
